How to Refrigerate Asparagus Without Wilting

Properly storing your fruit and vegetables is vital n not only maintaining the freshness level of the product, but also extending the life of the food. Asparagus is no different, as you must properly store it, otherwise the vegetable is gong to wilt, reducing the flavor, consistency and also reducing the vitamin intake provided by the asparagus. As the fibers and proteins in the vegetable break down and deteriorate, so to do the vitamins and minerals, reducing the health benefits of the food.

Purchase the asparagus within a few days of using the vegetable. Asparagus only stays fresh for a few days, even when following all available tips and tricks. You also don’t know how long it has been sitting in the store, so if you can use the asparagus the same day, that is recommended. If this isn’t possible, try to shoot for no more than four days, otherwise you are going to see wilting.

When you first get the asparagus home after purchasing from the store, wrap the asparagus in a damp paper towel. This added water helps keep the asparagus fresh. It functions in a similar manor to placing flowers and plants into a vase. It extends the freshness level by a few days, but this does not mean you can keep it forever.

Insert the wrapped asparagus into a plastic bag and seal it up. This helps keep the moisture locked into the asparagus. Don’t over saturate the paper towel though, as the super wet towel is just going damage the asparagus, making it squashy when eating.
